Position Summary:

Western is seeking experienced bricklayers.  With supervision,  lays building materials, such as brick, to construct or repair walls, partitions, arches, and other structures, in accordance with generally accepted standards of the craft.    Some of the duties and responsibilities include commercial caulking/window glazing, waterproofing, wall and floor coatings, structural concrete repairs and masonry. 

Typical Duties:

  • Cut out/removal and replacement of existing brick.
  • Measures distance from reference points and marks guidelines on working surface to layout work.
  • Spreads soft bed (layer) of mortar that serves as base and binder for brick, using trowel.
  • Applies mortar to end of brick and positions brick in mortar bed.
  • Taps brick with trowel to level, align and embed in mortar, allowing specified thickness of joint.
  • Removes excess mortar from face of brick, using trowel.
  • Finishes mortar between brick with pointing tool or trowel.
  • Breaks bricks to fit spaces too small for whole brick, using edge of trowel or brick hammer.
  • Determines vertical and horizontal alignment of courses, using plumb bob, gaugeline
  • (tightly stretched cord), and level.
  • Fastens brick or terra cotta veneer to face of structures with tie wires embedded in mortar between bricks.
  • May weld metal parts to steel structural members.
  • May be required to rig mobile and stationary scaffolding on structures in accordance with corporate guidelines.


 Workers should be able to:

  • Follow specific directions; perform a variety of duties which may often change; work within standards of accuracy; repeat tasks of short duration according to a set procedure; evaluate information using measurable standards.
  • Identify existing and predictable hazards to work surroundings, including working conditions that are unsanitary, hazardous or dangerous to employees.
  • Must be able to demonstrate sufficient reading, writing and math skills to comprehend and explain company safety policies and material instructions.
  • Communicates effectively with fellow workers.
  • Physically, workers must be able to stand or walk for long periods; lift and carry materials weighing 50 pounds or more; climb ladders, scaffolds and other objects carrying tools and equipment; and see (naturally or with correction).
  • An ability to work at heights, extreme temperatures and to wear company's safety equipment is essential.
  • Possess skills required to perform concrete and/or masonry restoration tasks including concrete patching, tuckpointing, brick replacement, caulking.


Licenses and/or certifications may be required for specific tools and equipment, vehicles and scaffolding.
